Joel Goldfarb, Executive Chef
Joel brings unprecedented experience to culinary-minded people from all walks of life. His diverse accomplishments include a San Francisco restaurant to leading a management consulting firm. His international food and wine expeditions for more than a quarter century cover multiple continents. Inspired by great chefs like Paul Bocuse and Julia Child, he has learned from a who's who list of chefs including Jean-Marc Villard, Patrick Vessière, Pierre Corre, Loretta Rampone and Weezie Mott to name but a few. Joel is a graduate of Rider University and has studied extensively all over France at the Université de Franche-Comté, the Bordeaux Centre de Linguistique Appliquée, the Cordon Bleu in Paris, and the l'École des Arts in Lyon as well as the California Culinary Academy.

 

Betty Hinshaw, Culinary Instructor
An oncology nurse by day, Betty showcases her nurturing nature by sharing her love of cooking and baking with all kinds of people. Having cooked her entire life, she loves to prepare big holiday feasts and works wonders cultivating vegetables and home-grown herbs into epicurean creations. Betty began taking courses at Chez Bay Gourmet several years ago to expand her culinary horizons. A natural-born mentor, Betty began assisting at the cooking school shortly thereafter. Betty heads up our Baking with Betty classes.


Lucille Howard, Culinary Specialist

Lu Howard has spent the past four years teaching at Cooking Camp and instructing atother events as well. A veteran scout leader, Lu is a natural working with young children and teens alike. Lu holds a PhD in microbiology which comes in handy when lecturing on everything from sourdough fermentation to her extensive knowledge of botany and herbs. Lu


Kevin Pearce, Culinary Instructor

A North Carolina native, Southern food has always been in Kevin's blood. His epicurean journeys took an eastern detour when he married his wife of Chinese descent. A few years ago, his taste buds took a further detour when he discovered the delicious world of Mediterranean food. After earning a certificate in Durham Tech's culinary program where in addition to his obvious talent for cooking, Kevin demonstrated leadership teaching his fellow students. Kevin is a very passionate and patient teacher who enjoys sharing his knowledge and creativity. Kevin heads up our Cooking with Kevin classes.


Larry Phipps, Culinary Instructor
Larry grew up surrounded by a cultural diversity that still propels his culinary curiosity and interest. In his quest for fresh approaches to cooking, he has explored regional specialties ranging from his family’s roots in the Tex-Mex border and high plains ranch country to the Midwest specialties of Kansas City, to the historic Southern kitchens of Atlanta and the European influences of New York and New England. Larry contributes his enthusiasm and experience to coaching others in the delights of culinary discovery as a member of our team of instructors. Larry’s hope is that others will be inspired to undertake their own searches for new, exciting, and rewarding food adventures.

Pam Poole, Assistant Culinary Instructor
A native of South Carolina, Pamela had her first culinary experience with her father, a Florence Country Club chef of 15 years. It was during her early, youthful days that cooking grew into a passion for Pam. As Pam catered and hosted numerous events for family and friends throughout the years, her desire for culinary knowledge continued to grow. Pam received her Certificate in Culinary Arts from Durham Technical Community College.
